Most stage floors are polished hardwood, which is hardly
representative of the desired floor type of most productions. For
this reason, the floor is often covered with something more fitting to
the scene of the production. Choosing a workable floor material is
often difficult, as the material has to be resistant to scuffing,
flat, easy to remove, and inexpensive. Often times it is difficult to
meet all of these goals, which is a primary reason why the floor is
often ignored in productions.
Many different materials can be used for floor coverings. Fabric,
pressed hardboard, rugs, carpeting, and vinyl flooring can all be
used with good results. Some surfaces, such as hardboard, lend
themselves to painting, which makes creating almost any sort of
pattern easy.
