Saihaj
On most frontier worlds, the act of settlement is done in an established, aggressive, and mostly unexplored biome. While most scouting surveys will catalog the vast majority of the major plant and animal species, it is often the minor ones, such as the local bacteria, that give the most trouble to settlers. Therefore, it is common to have a team of experts in Standarization?, or normalizing the biome of the planet to galactic-standards by introducing offworld species with enough advantages to allow settlers to survive. In practice, it is more accurate to say that they barely tweak just enough offworld species for a settlement to be successful. In major communities, there is often a large team with advanced laboratories. In smaller settlements, there are usually just a few part-time workers with skill, but few resources immediately at their disposal. Canton has a team consisting of Saihaj Virdee and his wife Souvana Monkoltham, focusing on plants and bacteria, with Kannitha Rous looking at parasites and larger animals. Saihaj is responsible for identifying the naitive life that is causing the problem, while Souvana delivers the cure. They are a talented pair at mid-career, thinking of settling down and raising a family for a few years. Their lab is small and growing ever more depleted as the isolation of Aysemius grows deeper, and they also run a modest farm with many small crops to test out a wide variety of crop strains to see which grow best under local conditions. Already, they have identified a better strain of a major cereal crop which has increased the agricultural output of Canton by sixty percent.
Saihaj is short, with dark hair and a large mustache. He is usually cheery and is liable to talk your ear off about anything from his work to the weather to your work to someone else's work (or business). He doesn't much like Ildio, doesn't associate much with Kurgan or Charlie, and is on good terms with most other townspeople. He is a frequent customer of Zara and Karthad as he has a lot of business in the city. He and Souvana met while interning under Keldic Uldamanth, and they often have many old tales to tell. He is not very adventuresome and after interning, they went on a series of follow-up assignments that led to an unimpressive career midpoint here in Canton. Aysemius does not have much in the way of native hostile organisms, so he spends more time looking for potential beneficial aspects for sale to a pharmaceutical company.
