Crystal

The Adegan crystals at the heart of every Lightsaber are what allow its operation and what attune it to the Force. Each crystal is a certain type of ordinary carbon-based crystal, but with a large quantity of highly Force-attuned organic compounds contained within the crystal lattice. The crystals are rare and difficult to find (far more so than their cousins, the so-called Modifier Crystals). The only known locations where the crystals are available in quantity are in the Adegan and Illum systems, although they are known to grown in other Force-attuned locations on occasion, but usually with lower purity, smaller size, and less variety.

There are five types of crystal, each with varying degrees of potency.

The Jedi Order prefers to use Mephite in its sabers, as it can often be found by a dedicated searcher. The Sith often use other sources of crystal which may preclude such high-quality gems as the Jedi use. They are also more likely to make use of synthetic crystals than the Jedi.

Synthetic Crystals

As Lightsaber Crystals are simply Force-attuned versions of known crystals with known impurities, they can be synthesized. The process rarely produces gems of the same quality as found in nature, but it is much faster and is usually far easier than the trip to locations where the Crystals grow. (Sound like a Dark Side path? Well, sort-of...)

The Sith make extensive use of this method, and can routinely produce a usable gem (at least Kathracite quality) within a few days of effort and the appropriate equipment. The method is the same as producing a gem of the same base type, but adding Force-imbued organics to the matrix. For the Sith, this usually means Force-imbued blood, either their own, their servant's, or their prisoner's. The Sith method requires the Alchemy power and a gem-creation device. The blood can come from whatever source they desire, but the quantity determines a bonus/penalty to the effects and the difficulty to construct.

The Jedi have a much more time-consuming method of synthasizing gems. While the basic equipment is the same, the Jedi use plants grown in Force-attuned locations. They are picked only after ensuring they have been spliced into other living plants or have pollinated other plants that will continue living, then they are taken, ground up, and inserted into the raw materials. The selection, breeding, and care of these plants can require quite an effort, especially if one is attempting for a stronger Force connection. This will determine a bonus/penalty to the effects and construction difficulty.

Construction Difficulties

Crystal Type Base Difficulty Base Damage Penalty (from 5Dc or 6Ds) Material Cost Time
Syn Kathracite 10 -3D 100cr. 20 hours (10 hours with point)
Syn Relacite 15 -(2D+1) 200cr. 100 hours
Syn Danite 20 -(1D+2) 400cr. 200 hours
Syn Mephite 25 -1D 800cr. 500 hours
Syn Pontite 30 -0D 2000cr. 1000 hours

Construction Bonuses/Penalties

  • Sith

The Sith can get one point per wound inflicted on any subject (i.e. wound = 1 point, killed = 5 points) that can be spent on the following items for each subject, with the following restrictions:

  • Self - By inflicting damage to themselves, the Sith can use points on reduction of difficulty to synthasize, reduction in time by one step (one point only), or give bonuses of +1D per two points to one power if the Sith has used rage and was using the power at the time the wounds were inflicted in the ritual. The crystal synthisization process must begin within two minutes of the wounds being inflicted.

  • Servent or other Force-Sensitive Subject - By inflicting damage to those under their command, the Sith can use one point on reduction of difficulty and/or time step and any other points on creating a bonus of +1D for each 2 points spent on any Force power affecting that one individual by the Sith. Only one individual can contribute to a particular crystal and only one crystal can be active in a saber at a time. Multi-crystal sabers can make use of different crystals with different properties/subjects. Crystal fabrication must begin within two minutes of the wounds being inflicted.

  • Captured Force Sensitive - By inflicting damage to their enemies, the Sith can use points to increase damage by +1D for 2 points, +2D for 4 points, and +3D for five points. Alternately, two points can be spent to give +1D to all Force powers afflicting that one individual while the saber is active and in the control of the Sith. The spread must be declared before the ritual is begun. The same restrictions apply as in the Subject entry for multi-person, multi-crystal, and time.

  • Jedi

The Jedi get points for how much effort they put into cultivating their garden in a Light Side Force-imbued location. The Jedi constructing the saber must be involved to some significant degree in the garden (assists the tender at least 50% of the time required) or else there is a maximum point value of 1. This can also be gained by using a portion of a large plant in any Force-sensitive location.

Time Gardening/Agriculture Difficulty Points
1 week 10 1
1 month 15 2
6 months 20 3
1 year 25 4
10 years 30 5

The gardening or agriculture check must be made once each timeframe smaller than the base time, i.e. 1 week requires five daily checks, 10 years requires 30 monthly checks. If the check is a failure, that time simply does not count. If the check fails by more than half, the total time accumulated is reduced by one unit. If the check fails by more than half and a botch occurs, remove half the accumulated progress.

Points can be spent in the following manner:

Effect Cost
+1D damage 1 (up to -0D penalty), 2 (into bonusland)
-5 to difficulty 1 (can be spent multiple times)
+1D to specific Force power while using active saber 2
+1D to resist effects of Dark Side while using active saber 2
