The IDE cable is constructed using two IDC 2mm 44-pin headers and 22 strips
of paired 2mm ribbon cable. It is easiest to start with un-stripped ribbon
(e.g. all 44 pins still intact). Crimp one IDC connector to one end of the
ribbon. Then strip back the wire pairs to flip the pins. Use a strip of
tape (preferably gaffer's tape, but electrical tape or duct tape will work)
to stick the flipped pairs down in a row. Once you've neatly assembled an
entire row with all of the pairs flipped, crimp on the second connector.
Trim away the excess wire and test. Stripping the cable into pairs gives it
a lot of flexibility and allows it to be routed around obstacles on the PC
board such as capacitors, etc.
