Noven J'Taal was a rich businessman and aspiring politician on Brentaal a few years ago. When he and his wife Trice had their first child, Kayl, the local Jedi Order representative informed them that Kayl was Force-Sensitive and that she would be taken to the Jedi Temple? on Coruscant for training. They were dismayed and decided to give up everything to remain a family. They fled, eventually settling on Aysemius in the hamlet of Canton. At that point, they were going under the name Meylin. When a Brentaalian trader visited the settlement about a year before the story began, their true identities were revealed. It was a scandal for the small town, although more in the "something to talk about" vein than anything hostile. Most were supportive, having settled in order to get away from government influence in the first place. Almost all others were indifferent, or soon grew to be.

Noven was an Alderman of the Village of Canton. He is most appreciative of what Zara Koor has done for Kayl. He and Trice are worried about what Lorq J'von is doing to her now, and have joined the crew of the Blood Price to help find her. Noven is training in astrogation while Trice is pairing up with Tara Vash as the gunners.
