Medium-Range Scout
The name is deceptive, as "Medium-Range" for a scouting vessel can take it months outside of explored space. Typically equipped with redundant systems such as two backup hyperdrives and on-board repair capacity, these are the exploration craft of choice for small groups. The most expensive of these vessels are designed so as to maximize the available space as well as apparent space inside. They are also well-stocked with entertainment and research media, as the crew may spend months in hyperspace with only each other for company. A typical crew compliment for a Medium-Range Scoutting vessel is 6 people, although given their rigorous life-support systems they can generally accomidate more with a reduced safety (and comfort) factor.
In way of contrast, Medium-Range scouting vessels should be compared to the next step up.
Long-Range scouting vessels are typically capital-ship scale and include actual manufacturing capabilities which could, with time and appropriate materials, replace any component of the ship including entire hyperdrives. They inevitably contain smaller vessels and could, in principle, be used to start a sustainable colony on a virgin world.
