Control Difficulty: Heroic+GM modifiers (see below)
Sense Difficulty: Heroic+GM modifiers (see below)
Effect: Unlike other Force powers, a Jedi does not have to learn this power to use it. Instead, any Jedi with a total of 9D or more in Force skills can attempt to use this power... at the moment of his death.
At the moment the Jedi knows death is imminent (just after a fatal wound, or just before it), the Jedi calms his mind and body (Control roll), preparing to surrender his mortal shell. The Jedi then reaches out with his mind, tracing the ebb and flow of the Force around him and through him (Sense roll). Upon succeeding at both rolls, the Jedi's spirit exits his body and becomes one with the Force. His body fades into nothingness, its raw matter converted into energy, once again united in harmony with the Force. However, the difficulty of this is almost entirely up to the GM under the following rules.
For Light Side characters, it boils down to one question: Did the character accomplish (or set in motion) everything that he was "supposed" to do? If becoming a Force Spirit will allow the character to make necessary adjustments to an otherwise accomplished plan, then the difficulty should be reachable for the character. If the characters goals are accomplished or would be accomplished through death, the difficulty should be trivial for the character. If goals are unlikely to succeed due to the character's death, the difficulty should be difficult to reach even with a Force Point. Finally, each Dark Side Point adds +10 to the difficulty.
For Dark Siders, the same question is asked, but the effects are nearly reversed. If the character did not accomplish everything desired (highly likely unless they died willingly passing on their glalactic empire, but when does a villain do that?), then they are bound to this realm through their will, their rage, and the Dark Side of the Force. No story modifiers, just a Heroic/Heroic roll. Anyone can do it, but it isn't easy. Dark Jedi require some sort of Focus for their efforts, as the Dark Side is much more violent and difficult to control. Anything from an amulet to a tomb complex may be the focus, however. With careful construction and use of Alchemy, a Dark Jedi may grant bonuses to his check to beocme a Dark Force Spirit. As to the choice of Focus, this has been a very personal choice. Generals, Emperors and others who would visibly wield power tend to choose large monuments to stand the test of time, wheras those who use manipulation and deception more tend to prefer amulets or smaller focuses. There are many exceptions, and each has benefits and drawbacks.
Jedi who pass in this fashion do not completely die. They become a Force Spirit, as described in section 5.6 below.
