Cap Ship Fighter Wings

Chapter Three: Fighter Wings

Many capital vessels carry starfighters, either internally in hangar bays or externally on some sort of rack or mount. Entire squadrons of capital ships can carry hundreds of TIEs?, making combat using the normal space combat rules impossibly detailed. This section will present rules for using starfighters in a manner consistent with the capital ship combat rules.

Each capital ship carrying starfighters has a commander for those starfighters, who may or may not be the bridge officer relaying orders from the Captain to the starfighters. This bridge officer is usually one of those given "full discretion" to carry out a set of pre-arranged orders for one or more squadrons so the captain may concentrate on running his ship. Starfighters deal primarily with other starfighters or occasionally with small ships up to a light cruiser, so there is usually little interaction with their commanders.

To fully understand the rules, a brief discussion of starfighter wing organization is required. See Appendix B for details on Rebel and Imperial fighter wing structure. Once fighter wing organization is understood, the template and rules will make more sense.
