Background

If you search long and hard through the Library in Castle Amber, you will eventually find an old and musty book in a secret and forgotten desk drawer.  The book details the ancient history of Amber back before Oberon's marriage to Cymnea, back to a time when the walls of the Castle were still rough and crude and Amber itself was just starting it's long rise to prosperity.  It was then that Oberon lived with his Royal Families.

We say Families for Oberon had travelled wide and far through Shadow and, not being content with ruling Amber, he'd become King in four slightly different, but closely neighboring Shadows of that land.   There he lived and loved and had his children.  Finally, from each Shadow, he called his children and brought them to Amber to receive their heritage and walk the Pattern.

To one familiar with the history of Amber it should come as no surprise that the Families found little love between them and began to plot and scheme against each other at once.  It should come as even less surprise that Oberon did nothing about this state of affairs beyond curbing the more...blatant offences.  But one day, Oberon again called all his children to his side and announced that one of them would be declared his official heir.

The sibling rivalry became quite intense indeed...
