Of the Use of Ghouls by Our Kind
Much of the discussion of ghouls in this document is restricted to ghouls
belonging to members of the Camarilla and its allies. There are a number
of reasons for this. Firstly, no other sects or clans use ghouls as much
as the Camarilla and its clans. Secondly, I do not know quite as much
about how other sects and clans use their ghouls. In any case, here is
what I do know:
-
Camarilla
- Ghouls are used most commonly by the Camarilla. It is common
for ghouls to
appear at social functions, acting as heralds, messengers, atttache's and
bodyguards. Indeed, it is often impossible for someone of low Status to
meet another Kindred without first meeting his or her ghoul, and even
Elders will often not meet unless ghouls on both sides have met first and
worked out the details.
Sabbat
- These foul Kindred rarely use ghouls, believing themselves superior to all
Kine, even those who carry our Vitae. However, there are some ghoul
families, the "revenants" I mentioned earlier, who serve the sect.
Anarchs
- Those who would tear down our society and replace it with chaos tend to
use ghouls as either pawns or bishops, and only occasionally as knights.
Their shoestring existence prevents them from doing otherwise.
Inconnu
- Who can say what these Kindred do? I have heard that they
have many ghouls working as spies in other sects, even in the
Sabbat.
Caine
- It is said that a ghoul of Caine's from the First City still exists. If he
could be found, he could certainly say much about our history.
Antediluvians
- Whatever ghouls they have had have most likely been sacrificed during the
Jyhad.
Methuselahs
- The few Methuselahs who are still active and not in Torpor use many
ghouls, or none.
Elders
- Except for the Methuselahs, the Elders use more ghouls than all others.
The Princes, Primogen and other leaders all need additional hands to do
their work.
Ancillae
- The Ancillae vary widely in the number of ghouls they use. Some are much
like Elders, though their more limited resources prevent them from having
the stable of ghouls many Elders have. Others, trying to be different,
have very few or no ghouls.
Neonates
- The youngest of our kind are the ones who use ghouls in the most
different, and often unsanctioned, ways. You will find the majority of
cult leaders here among the ranks of Neonates, with their herds of pawns,
though sooner or later an Elder comes along to take control and turn the
leader into a pawn herself.
Brujah
- The forever restless Brujah tend to keep bishops by their side, and do not
often make use of knights and pawns. Their rebel nature prevents them from
creating those who would be rebels if given the chance.
Gangrel
- These wandering Kindred tend not to have ghouls, though those who have
settled to any degree will often develop a following of like-minded
vagabonds.
Malkavian
- Forever unpredictable, the Malkavians most assuredly have ghouls of all
kinds. Would they settle for anything less?
Nosferatu
- The Nosferatu also use ghouls of all kinds - bishops to take care of their
havens and clothing once the stench becomes too foul, knights to guard
them, and pawns to provide the information they are so fond of.
Toreador
- The art-lovers often have the largest number of ghouls, due to the ready
supply of Vitae in their herds. It is not uncommon for a Toreador to have
one or more ghoul lovers, kept until they become passe'.
Tremere
- The ghouls of the clan of mages are not often out and about, since the
Tremere are afraid of other clans extracting information from the ghouls.
Besides, only the Tremere know what experiments they have performed upon
their servants...
Ventrue
- Of the clans in the Camarilla, the Ventrue make the largest use of
knights, in the form of bodyguards, soldiers, and very helpful officers of
the law. The clan of Princes uses the other types of ghouls as well, often
maintaining ghouls past their normal lifespans in order to retain the
knowledge and skills the ghouls have won over the years.
Lasombra
- I have heard that the Lasombra make more use of ghouls than other clans in
the Sabbat, but I fail to see how this would be, since the Sabbat as a
whole tends not to have ghouls. In any case, my guess would be that their
use is much like like that of the Ventrue.
Tzimisce
- From what I have learned, many of the revenant families are descended from
servants of this clan. The loyalties that must exist leave me with any
number of questions, such as why aren't the Tzimisce more powerful?
Assamite
- I have never heard of an assassin with a ghoul, so I cannot say more.
Followers of Set
- These corrupters have no compunctions about using ghouls in any way
imaginable. Suicide attacks by pawns are the least of your worries with
these beasts.
Giovanni
- The mysterious Giovanni do have a number of ghouls of all types, both to
protect themselves and their investments.
Ravnos
- I have avoided these pickpockets and cutthroats all of my life, Annalyn,
and I suggest you do the same.
Antitribu
- I believe that the clans of the Black Hand follow the "party line", so to
speak, and tend not to have ghouls.
Caitiff
- Consider the clanless ones as you would Anarchs, for they are no better.
