Syllabus (Fall 98)
 
Week 1  
Title: An introduction to IL: What is IL?  What we'll cover (syllabus, etc).
Exercise: "Bell the Cat" a short IL event (in two groups).
Discussion: Defining roles, and moments.  Comparing notes between the groups.
Assignment: Complete casting questionaire for Marin County.  Get e-mail accounts.
 
Week 2  
Title: Characterization: Acting tools and costuming.
Exercise: Roleplying examples: improv senarios (magic spoon) 
Discussion: Status roles and interpersonal space 
Assignment: Read and react to an assigned character in Marin County.  Expectations?
 
Week 3  
Title: An IL Event 
Exercise: Marin County Event 
Discussion:  - 
Assignment: A reaction to the event.  What did you do?  What were you thinking? 
 
Week 4  
Title: Wrapping an event
Exercise:  - 
Discussion: Analysis of character and plot weaving.  Disscussion of participatory wrapping techniques
Assignment: Read "Morals in Roleplaying?" 
 
Week 5  
Title: Starting to put together an event
Excercise: In game plot and subplot concepts; character workshop
Discussion: Weaving plot and characters.  Solid setting and genre concepts.
Assignment: In pairs, write two characters for Plot Pyramid exercise
 
Week 6  
Title: Run of Plot Pyramid 
Exercise: Balancing characters, the game as a "whole", metagaming issues
Discussion: Run of the Plot Pyramid
Assignment: Divide into four groups, prepare preliminary plot ideas for final plots
 
Week 7  
Title: Your Event- The Final Project
Exercise: Game mechanics, props, costuming
Discussion: Plot concept discussions, game writing workshop in groups, creating a casting  questionnaire(for later use in class events)
Assignment: Finalise Uberplot(s), Begin subplots and preliminary character outlines
 
Week 8  
Title: How to run an event
Exercise: Group meetings- Plot progress and balancing. 
Discussion: Role of a GM, arbitration, storytelling, floor GM-ing.  Character casting. 
Assignment: Completion of Final Event--- Uberplot, Subplots, Characters.  Fill out Class  Casting Questionnaires. 
 
Week 9  
Title: Large Scale Events (No Class) 
Exercise: field trip to New England Roleplaying Organization site in Ware, MA. In lieu of  class. 
Discussion: Debrief, what are the differences between Live Action and IL? 
Assignment: Completion of props. Group1- cast characters(e-mail distrib.) 
 
Week 10  
Title: RUN 1 
Exercise: 2-hour run of event 1
Discussion: Debrief and analysis of run 1
Assignment: Group 2- cast characters(e-mail distrib.)  1 page response to run 1
 
Week 11  
Title: RUN 2 
Exercise: 2-hour run of event 2
Discussion: Debrief and analysis of run 2
Assignment: Group 3- cast characters(e-mail distrib.)  1 page response to run 2
 
Week 12  
Title:  RUN 3 
Exercise: 2-hour run of event 3
Discussion: Debrief and analysis of run 3
Assignment: Group 4- cast characters(e-mail distrib.)  1 page response to run 3
 
Week 13  
Title:  RUN 4 
Exercise: 2-hour run of event 4
Discussion: Debrief and analysis of run 4
Assignment: 1 page response to run 4.  5 page analysis of one IL event, characterization  analysis, plot problems and resolutions, applicability of IL to traditional Drama,   storytelling and fiction writing
