How to have Fun:
Foosball and Frisbee
(and Fluxx?)
Welcome to a page dedicated to all those fun, mindless, senseless games
like Foosball and Frisbee. You know the type. The kind of game you can
just mess around with your friends in and have a complete blast despite
the fact that you are getting thoroughly thrashed of can't throw a
frisbee to save your life.
Foosball
The first (and greatest?) of these games is Foosball. For those of you
who are unfamiliar with this term may know it as Table Soccer.
The point of the game is to hit the ball into your opponent's goal using
small dolls which are arranged on bars so that you can move them from
side to side and make them kick.
Fun can be had by all because the game can be played quite well by
beginers, and it is easy to cheat by blowing the ball around or
actually picking it up off the table.
Foosball can be played by two to eight players, with two or four being
the most common. I suggest four for
maximum enjoyment. Play two players on a team... one on offense the
other on defense... then switch if you are getting bored or want a
new "challenge."
By the way... spinning the dolls can be fun, to get more power,
but don't do it for too long cause it can become annoying, and
detracts from the fun of the game (mindless though it may be)
Frisbee
Ahh... frisbee. A real game... the final proof that winter is over, and
that it's great to be outside. This is a great passtime....
If you want to get the most fun out of frisbee - practice. It is far more
fun to play when you can throw a variety of throws and can catch
reasonably reliably (that way you don't end up spending more time chasing
after a missed frisbee than actually playing). It order to do
this...START SMALL!! Distance throwing can be fun, but be prepared to
run particularly if even one person has an accuracy problem.
First, get the basic forehand throw down. Use it a lot. Even if you are
working on another throw, always make sure people spend more time playing
than running. Once you have other throws relatively accurate you are
ready to start spreading out a little. By the time you are up to four
strong throws you are ready to play a distance game.
Even when you have mastered distance throwing, a close game can be fun.
There are a lot of throws that really cannot get any distance but are
very effective when you are close.
Oh, and the quality of the frisbee does make a differnce.
Games:
Besides just throwning the disk around, you might want to play some games
which use your new found frisbee talents. Games usually require more
people that a casual disk tossing session. Still, if you find yourself
swamped with friends and a disk on a nice day, here are some ideas of
games you could try.
Ultimate frisbee:
Sort of like a cross between netballand football, but played with a
frisbee, this game is played in teams. Each team
tries to catch the frisbee in the end zone of the field. Possesion
chnges if the frisbee is: caught by an opposing team member, thouches
the ground, or goes out of bounds. When you have the frisbee your feet
cannot move.
500:
One person is designated the thower, and stands away from the rest of
the players. The thrower throws the frisbee towards the crowd. Catch the
frisbee and get 100 points. Touching the frisbee but not catching it
is negative 50 points per touch -- and the person who catches it gets
an extra 50 points per touch. Touching the frisbee without catching
it it and then catching it is an additional 50 per touch. First one to 500
wins and get to be the next thrower.
Frisbee Golf:
Each player must have a frisbee for this game. Pick eighteen targets
(holes) -- street signs, doors, and lamposts work well. See who can
hit the traget in the fewest throws (throwing from where the frisbee
lands). Keep tally of the throws, person with lowest total throws
wins.
Fluxx
OK! OK! So Fluxx isn't a mindless game... but neither are foosball and
frisbee really (damn! there goes the page concept). What all of these
games have in common is that you don't have to think about them
inorder to enjoy them. You don't have to stratagize, don't have to plan,
don't even have to pay constant attention.
ICE's card game Fluxx is a
very simple game. It has one rule - "draw one card, and then play one
card." This rule may change as the game goes on. You get to have fun
things like Love and Chocolate, and it may be your hippism that finally
wins the game.
In the right mindset you can let chance and whim control the game, and
watch the fun. I haven't had this game too long... but one thing I have a
hard time remembering is... who has won. I know someone has, but some how
it hardly seems important to the game.
So, if you get a chance, pick up a copy - I highly recommend it. It costs
about $10 - and no - it's not a collectable card game. $10 and you own a
copy every card ever printed. Well, what are you waiting for... go get
it!
