BALANCE OF POWER

'Nine months.  The measure of a human life, rise and fall of
heat and harvest, unending cycle from which We Caine's twice-
born have forever removed Ourselves.  Nine months of day and
night.  Nine months in which to hunt, feed, scrounge, learn,
gather, and grow strong.  A fitting span, is it not?

'My time here is done.  In nine months one of you will take
My place, through whatever artifices of betrayal, false
diplomacy, and desperation you can muster.

'My valediction, lords, ladies, and lowborn of this poison

It is that hunger which will see one of you rise to power...
or shatter Our city in the attempt.

'Nine months.  Deus vult.'
